How to Play
1. Read your guide
It contains everything you need to know about your character and their part in the mystery.
2. Ask questions
Share your Character Information, keep your secrets until somebody asks the right question and always answer honestly.
3. Make your accusation
Work out who had the motive, means and opportunity, then cast your vote. Even the killer does not know they are guilty until the final reveal.
How to Host
1. Cast your characters
Assign every Suspect, then add as many optional Witnesses as you need. Send everyone their personal guide before the party or hand them out on the day.
2. Set the scene
Gather your players, put out the clues and read the opening announcement aloud.
3. Begin the investigation
Let your guests know how long they have to interrogate their fellow players, then declare the investigation open. Players ask each other questions, compare stories and piece together the clues.
4. Reveal the truth
When time is up, bring everyone together to share their theories and make a final accusation. Then read the Big Reveal to discover who cracked the case.
Frequently Asked Questions

Mystery Maker lets you create a personalised version of one of our professionally written murder mysteries.
Choose a game that suits your group, customise the cast and selected story details, preview your mystery and receive a complete game pack ready to print and play.
The mystery itself is written by Nobody’s Fool. Mystery Maker personalises and assembles it for you rather than generating a new story with AI.
-
This depends on the mystery you choose.
Start by selecting your number of players and Mystery Maker will show you the games available for that group size. Each version has a carefully designed cast, so you do not need to work out which characters to add or remove yourself.
-
Depending on the mystery, you can customise character and victim names, pronouns, character appearance styles, selected story details, your game title, an optional “Created by” name, cover artwork, document font and clue difficulty.
Different mysteries have different story questions, so the exact options will vary.
-
You can personalise the characters, but their role in the mystery stays the same.
The killer, solution, motives, relationships and important story facts are carefully written in advance. Keeping these elements fixed means you can personalise your game without accidentally breaking the mystery.
-
No. Each player-count version has its own fixed, tested cast.
Choose your group size first and Mystery Maker will automatically use the correct characters for that version of the story.
-
Characters can currently use she/her, he/him or they/them.
Names and pronouns are independent, so you can combine any character name with any of these options. Custom pronouns and neopronouns are not currently supported.
-
Difficulty changes the printable clues, not the underlying story.
Easy, Standard and Hard versions use different clue sets to change how much help your players receive. The characters, motives, solution and final reveal remain the same.
-
No. Mystery Maker is designed to give you a complete game pack with the information needed to host and play your mystery.
Players receive their own individual Character Guides, while the host receives separate instructions and the full solution.
-
Your personalised download is a ZIP file containing a Host Guide PDF, an individual Character Guide PDF for every player and a Printable Clue Pack PDF using your chosen difficulty.
Everything is generated specifically for the version of the mystery you created.
-
Yes. Mystery Maker includes a spoiler-safe preview so you can check your personalisation before continuing.
The preview is designed to show your personalised content without revealing secret information or the solution. Its on-screen layout may not be an exact visual copy of the final printable PDFs.

Your recovery code lets you return to an active Mystery Maker order later.
It is particularly useful if you close the page, have a browser problem or prepare your mystery using a browser that does not support checkout.
Keep the code somewhere safe until you have successfully downloaded your game.
-
An unpaid prepared mystery and its recovery code are kept for 24 hours after preparation.
Once payment has been completed, your downloadable game pack is stored for 30 days. We recommend downloading and saving your ZIP as soon as your purchase is complete.

For the full experience, including checkout, please use Google Chrome, Safari or Microsoft Edge.
Other browsers may not display every feature correctly, so checkout is disabled on browsers we do not currently support.
You can still prepare your mystery and generate a recovery code, then open the recovery page in a supported browser to continue later.
-
No.
Our mysteries, characters, clues and solutions are written and produced by real people (you can find their names in the 'Game Credits' section of the pdf Hosting Guide)! Mystery Maker uses your choices to personalise and assemble that authored material. It does not ask AI to invent your mystery or rewrite the solution.
-
Murder mysteries depend on lots of connected facts. Changing something that seems small can accidentally reveal the killer, contradict another character or make an important clue stop working.
We therefore give you plenty of ways to make the game feel like yours while keeping the story details that are essential to solving the mystery safely locked.
-
Mystery Maker automatically checks the generated pack and can retry if preparation fails.
Because your personalisation is also saved in your browser as you work, refreshing the page should not normally mean starting again. If you have already generated a recovery code, you can also use that to return to your prepared order while it is still active.
